GEM 203 — Integument and Musculoskeletal System I

University of Cape Coast · Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - Graduate Entry Medicine · Year 2, Semester 2 · outline 2026/2027

GEM 203 studies the musculoskeletal framework of the body and the integument that covers it. Anatomy covers the bones, joints, muscle groups, nerves, vessels and lymphatics of the lower limb, gait, the peripheral pulses and sites of vascular access, and the back [P]. Embryology covers somites, limb development and ossification. Histology and Biochemistry cover the microscopic structure and molecular composition of bone, cartilage, connective tissue and muscle, collagen, bone metabolism and their disorders. Physiology covers the types of muscle, excitation–contraction coupling, the motor unit, fibre types, energetics, electromyography, muscle tone and locomotion, neuromuscular and autonomic transmission and the autonomic nervous system; Pharmacology covers drugs acting at these junctions and local anaesthetics. The integument is studied through its regional anatomy, dermatomes and dermatoglyphics, histology, development, biochemistry and pigmentation, functions and temperature regulation, and ageing, together with the structure, development and histology of the breast and the physiology of lactation. A proposed unit introduces the skin in disease: nutritional, hygiene-related, immune and genetic disorders, burns, and bacterial and viral infections. Weekly skills sessions cover examination of the limbs, skin, hair and nails, limb radiology and gait.

  • Expert study notes

Written alongside the questions, and each section links to the questions it teaches.

  • Learn the outline one line at a time

A question first, then the reasoning, with a suggested video where we find a good one, played right in the lesson.

  • Questions written to your outline

Practise a single line, the lines you choose, or a timed paper drawn from the whole bank.

  • Teach it back

Explain a line to an AI coursemate who asks what a classmate would, then see how well you taught it.

  • Ask why you got it wrong

A tutor walks you through a question you missed and why the answer is what it is. The course comes with tokens for it.

How our courses are built

  • Written by an expert, against this outline

Every question is written by a person to the outline on this page, not to the subject in general.

  • Built once enough of the class backs it

Nothing is written until it reaches its target, which is why it is listed now as an outline.

  • You see what is on a paper before you sit it

Each paper names its makeup and the outline lines it tests before you start.
